AIM Anglers Amped for Season Opener as 100-Boat Field Readies for Green Bay and Fox River April 9

The AIM Weekend Walleye Series is cruising to its season opener in the Wisconsin Division Nitro Boats Open with a full field of 100 boats vying for a $22,500 purse, and $8,000 for the team bringing in the biggest card of egg-laden spring spawners from the Fox River near Green Bay on Sunday, April 9.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that AIM’s first tournament of the year, featuring our unique Catch-Record-Release™ format is attracting both loads of attention and entrants amongst AWWS Fan Nation,” beamed National Tournament Director Denny Fox.

“The Green Bay field of 100 was set two weeks before the first boats launched. This shows more and more that angler competitors, both amateur and pro alike, are realizing that this is the way to go in tournament walleye fishing, to both protect the resource for local fishermen, and to ensure the future of the sport.”

The full field also means big paychecks for the top finishers. First place will go home with a guaranteed $8,000 check out of a total $22,500 purse.

Teams will crowd into the D2 Sports Pub Stadium District in Ashwaubenon on Saturday, April 8, to register prior to the 7 p.m. rules meeting. After boat inspection the next day starting at 5:30 a.m. at the Green Bay Metro access, the 100 teams will get the green flag starting at 7 a.m., in two flights of 50. Competitors must be back at the launch starting at 3 p.m.

Anglers can go as far upriver as the Wisconsin DNR upstream limit, just below the DePere dam. Downstream limit is in lower Green Bay, GPS latitude 44.35.000.

Last April’s winning team of Bill and Matt Bobber from Appleton recorded 43.95 pounds, crediting their success to staying on their marks with consistent boat control in cold, bumpy conditions. Will that mark be broken this spring, when the last word is always held by Mother Nature? We’ll all find out at the awards ceremony, starting at 5 p.m. at South Bay Marina.
