Eagle Bay Marina to Host AIM Great Lakes Championship Aug. 14-15
There are millions of reasons that the AIM Weekend Walleye Series has chosen Michigan’s Saginaw Bay and Eagle Bay Marina as the site for its first-ever Great Lakes Division Championship, taking place this Aug. 14-15.
Three million reasons, in fact.
For when entrants from across the region throttle up and head out on that Friday and Saturday, they’ll have, by state biologist estimates, up to three million hungry walleye waiting to test their fishing skills in a bay regarded as among the top destinations for marble eyes in the world.
Tournament sponsors are the Eagle Bay Marina and Saganing Eagles Landing Casino. The marina is located three miles from the casino, off Michigan Highway 13 (M-13), southeast of Standish.
Those millions of walleye will typically be on the move to the cooler waters of outer Saginaw Bay that time of year, and Eagle Bay Marina is strategically located to put those fish within easy reach of the entrants, said Denny Fox, AIM Weekend Walleye Series national tournament director.
“This is a perfect fit, at the perfect location, for this tournament that culminates our Great Lakes qualifying series that begins on the Detroit River this month,” Fox said. “It also fits perfectly with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe’s philosophy of conservation of the bay’s fish, thanks to AIM’s unique Catch-Record-Releaseä format.”
Fritz Kuhlman, marketing manager for the Migizi (Eagle in Ojibway) Economic Development Company, which operates Eagle Bay Marina which is part of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, said that the tribe was thrilled to have the marina as the launch site.
“We are extremely excited to host these anglers and this unique tournament at our casino and marina, sitting on literally some of the best walleye fishing in the world,” Kuhlman said. “It’s a natural fit. Since our totally renovated marina opened, the tribe has been looking to host a nationally recognized tournament, while also strongly sticking to the principle of conserving the bay’s walleye. AIM’s tournament format, which calls for returning fish to the water immediately after they’re caught and recorded, was the deciding factor in our decision to host this showcase event.”
Here’s how to qualify for the championship:
A team captain must enter at least three of the four Great lakes Division qualifying tournaments. Entry fee in qualifiers is $300. The first of 4 events is Sunday, April 19, on the Detroit River.
Championship entry is $500 per team and with a field of at least 75 boats, the first place team will receive $12,000.
Entrants will launch from and return to Eagle Bay Marina, 1893 Sagatoo Road, Standish MI each day.
Daily weigh-ins will be taking place at the Saganing Tribal Center, 5447 Sturman Road Standish, MI at 5:00PM. The center is adjacent to the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino, which is located at 2690 Worth Road, just southeast of Standish.
