Garmin On Board As Newest AWWS Sponsor For 2017 Series

Look who’s come aboard to be one of the 2017 AIM Weekend Walleye Series sponsors, promising to be one of the most visible: Garmin, a world leader in innovative navigation, sonar and fitness electronics.

“We at AIM couldn’t be more exited to welcome Garmin as one of our national sponsors. Not only will they be a presence at all our tournaments, the team taking the 2017 AIM Warrior Boats/Yamaha Outboards National Championship Shootout will drive away with a new Warrior V1898DC, powered by a new Yamaha 150 four-stroke and outfitted with the latest Garmin Marine electronics. That package is valued at more than $50,000,” announced Denny Fox, AWWS national tournament director.

“Founded in 1989 in Lenexa, Kansas, Garmin is known worldwide for its expertise in everything from navigation equipment for boats and aircraft, but also for automobile GPS systems and fitness trackers. Chances are you may use a Garmin in your vehicle,” Fox said.

Representing Garmin’s unique-in-the-industry system in AIM is Andover, Minnesota-based and past AIM Minnesota Division Champion Danny Thompson, Garmin Marine Regional Sales Manager.

“I’ve fished AIM events since the beginning and when I began as sales manager with Garmin Marine, I knew this would be a great partnership that would benefit not only AIM and put a light-years-ahead-of anything-else unit on the championship boat, but also tell the story of what Garmin offers to all anglers and boaters across the country,” Thompson said. Both Thompson and Garmin are huge fans of AIM.

“AIM’s weekend series with the Catch-Record-Release™ formats meant I could compete with a friend without a big time outlay. We won the state championship the very first year, and took third on Mille Lacs in the Minnesota Division qualifier, so I was hooked,” he continued.

Garmin Marine also will sponsor all of AIM’s on-the-water updates from tournaments, and will be outfitting that championship boat with electronics that features Garmin’s exclusive Echomap CHIRP Series plotter/sonar.

Thompson explained that Garmin’s CHIRP series sets the industry bar for excellence, whether you’re a pro competitor or weekend family angler.

“With Garmin, all the maps are built into the unit. Our byword is that we want you to spend your time catching fish and less time worrying about your electronics,” he said. “We put polarizing screens on all of our units. And, we are the first with our Panoptix™ transducer, which transmits real-time sonar images. I used a Panoptix unit on Leech Lake last season, and by 8 a.m., we had a 25-pound bag because of it. It’s brand-new technology and no one else has it,” he said.

“With Panoptix, I can tell you that for instance, there’s a big walleye 3 feet off the bottom and moving from right to left, on the passenger side of the boat, as it happens. This is amazing to watch and it will change the way you fish, for sure. This makes all other sonar systems obsolete.”

You can see the Garmin system in both touch-screen and push-button models in action at all Minnesota Division qualifier tournaments this year, where “ride and try” runs will be offered in a Garmin-wrapped new Yamaha-powered Warrior V208 Dual Console, courtesy of Warrior Boat Center co-owner Dean Marshall, who also is Thompson’s 2017 AIM tournament partner.
