Hungry Post Spawn Walleyes will be the target for AIM Weekend Walleye Series “Nitro Boats Open” May 17th
Known for its legendary football team, the Green Bay Packers, this Wisconsin town is also known for one of the better walleye fisheries in the country, the Bay of Green Bay, the site of the AIM Weekend Walleye Series Wisconsin Division Qualifier tournament Sunday, May 17th.
With the nomadic nature of Green Bay fish, they could be here today and gone tomorrow. That’s the thinking of AIM’s National Tournament Director and the Wisconsin division director, Denny Fox. However, “With a warm up this week the teams will find hungry schools of post spawn walleye for the tournament this Sunday,” he said. “With the way spring has been setting up, fish should be in traditional locations relating to shoreline structure”.
Greg Wierzba of Green Bay has plenty of experience fishing the Bay both as a guide and tournament angler.
“This is an excellent fishery because it’s a large body of water with great food sources. Gizzard shad, smelt and suckers make excellent forage for walleyes.
“One of the better bites will be rigging live suckers catching 20-plus-inch fish,” he said.
After the spawn, fish move from the river systems back into the bay and begin to feed heavily.
Anglers will have a free run on all Wisconsin only waters for this event. Some will make runs of 45 miles.
According to Fox, Green Bay can fish as big or small as an angler chooses as there is plenty of structure where the fish like to feed.
“With runs as far as 45 miles, the field should be spread out nicely,” Wierzba said.
“It will be the team that finds and records big fish topping 28 inches, that will win this,” he said.
Wierzba says anglers better come to Green Bay knowing many techniques. “All aspects of walleye fishing will come into play. From trolling crankbaits, spinners with crawlers and even jigging, in six to 40 feet of water, you better have your ‘A’ game with you,” he said. “The majority of fish should come from jigging,” he said.
The tournament rules meeting is being hosted Saturday, May 16 at the D2 Sports Pub in Green Bay adjacent to Lambeau Field at 7p.m.
Boats will launch Sunday out of Green Bay Metro Launch at 7-7:15 a.m. Awards will take place at the launch at 5 p.m. Watch for updates on our face book page as the day unfolds.
