The AIM Pro Team Challenge returns to Oconto, WI, July 24-26, to tap into a prime site for monstrous walleyes. “I can’t wait to get my 300 horse Yamaha screaming across the bay of Green Bay,” said an excited Justin Schneider. “It is a tough bite right now with a large amount of bait in the system. You will see guys using both cranks and harnesses. Wind speed and direction will ultimately determine where we fish on tournament days.”
Lynn Nicklasch, a guide on Green Bay isn’t sure that a week of warm and stable weather leading up to the event will be enough to turn the northern part of the bay on. “The action is in the south right now, while I’m more at home fishing the northern part of the bay. The bite is completely different from south to north than it was a couple weeks ago. The week after the tournament the north should be on fire,” he laughed.
Like Schneider, he feels that both cranks and harnesses will be used. “Jigs will still be in play, but I’m not sold that that is the ticket.”
This will be the third year in a row that AIM has had a Pro Team Challenge out of the city of Oconto. “AIM is always excited to visit Oconto, WI and tap into their wonderful fishery. Each year we get to come back and it is our pleasure to be entertained by the city and their people. They really roll out the red carpet for us,” stated AIM Chairman Brett King. “We hope to once again showcase Oconto and how great of a community it is.”
The Oconto event will feature AIM’s Pro Team Challenge format (Pro-Pro-Co) where Pro Team partners will fish with a different Co-Angler on each tournament day. All AIM events utilize the Catch-Record-Release (CRR) system and the Pro Teams at Oconto will fish hard to catch and record the biggest walleyes in the Bay. Since no fish are kept, this unique and exciting tournament format allows AIM to hold highly competitive events on waters like the Bay of Green Bay without regard to state culling restrictions or slot limits.
Boats will take off from Breakwater Park in Oconto at 7:30am each day. Boats return at 3:30 each day and the weigh-in begins at 5:00pm. On Thursday there will be a boat parade at 4:30pm. On Friday there will be a youth fishing clinic after the weigh-in.
