Goin’ With The Flow: AIM’s 2018 National Championship Shootout Is A Day and A Wakeup Away
The Scene: 15,000 acres of some of the most beautiful walleye water you’ve ever seen. The Place: One of the most beautiful resorts catering to walleye anglers you’ve ever seen. The reason: The AIM Weekend Walleye Series Warrior Boats National Championship Shootout, one of the country’s most unique, best and most exclusive walleye tournaments you’ve ever seen, where one of 30 teams will go home with a boat-motor combo worth a cool 50 Large.
And it’s only three days and a wakeup before the call goes to some of the best on the water to start their engines.
“AIM and Fan Nation are about as pumped up to be here as the anglers are,” said Denny Fox, AIM National Tournament Director. “We’re in store for a great shootout to see who goes home with that beautiful Warrior 1898DC, the 150hp Yamaha Four-Stroke on the stern, and that cool Garmin electronics package that’s now waiting at Treeland Resorts on Chippewa Flowage for someone to drive it home Saturday afternoon.”
“We know this water body is holding some truly big ‘eyes. It’s one of the best in the state; Treeland’s an amazing place to host our event. Many of the teams entered have been trying to find the spots they think will do it for them most of this week,” he added. “We’ll see who solved it on Saturday.”
Tatum Treland-Schlapper of Treeland Resorts is also ready. She shared a bit of the history of “The Flowage,” as it’s known, was formed starting in 1923 when a hydro dam caused the existing two forks of The Chippewa River to back up.
It became Wisconsin’s third largest inland water body and the state’s largest “wilderness” lake, with 92 percent of its 200-plus miles of shoreline remaining undeveloped. It soon gained a reputation for holding B-I-G fish, including a world-record muskie.
At its deepest, it’s 92 feet, with 140 islands, and bays that hold more monster muskie, northerns, smallies and largemouths. Oh yeah, and walleye, too. It’s so big and complex that there are actually lakes within the lake, Fox added.
Treeland Resorts is headquarters for the AIM Shootout, and it’s plural—Resorts—because it’s actually six in one. Choose from rental homes and motel-style accommodations, to an RV resort, and the original lodge built by the Treland family. Boat rentals, from traditional pontoons to craft rigged just for anglers, are also available.
This lake produces big walleye on a variety of presentations all year. So, will it be won jigging minnows, pitching cranks into its vast shoreline structure? Is it going to be trolling that will get it done? Or will it be something else that one team has figured out and isn’t telling anyone until Saturday night?
Come this Thursday, we’ll all start to find out, as the 30 teams that qualified in 2018 will meet at Treeland Resorts, 9630 Treland Road, for the rules and registration check-in, beginning at 5 p.m. All the action starts Friday at 5:30 a.m. with boat inspections at Treeland. Boats can get wet at the spot of their choice, with the take-off time at 7 a.m. All 30 teams must check in each day at 3 p.m. The awards ceremony, and the new owner of that Warrior-Yamaha-Garmin combo, will be known starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Follow all the action to see who’s on top both days, with updates throughout the two-day show at AIM’s Facebook page and ProChattrr. With AIM’s unique Catch-Record-Release™ format, the best team with the biggest 10 golden ‘gators WILL win. Good luck, all teams!
Remember, if you think you’ve got the confidence and ability to stand on our podium, and we know there are plenty of anglers out there who do, there’s still time to get in the hunt for a spot in next year’s Shootout on the Missouri River near Bismarck, North Dakota. But, you’ve got to fish this year to do it. Entry forms and info on the rest of AIM’s schedule this season are at aimfishing.com.
